It does sound a bit odd.
But the topic of calculating an epemeris to deduce e.g. eclipses doesnt
really involve any particular view of
how celestial mechanics works.
Certainly the most convenient system of measurement involves
heliocentric fidstances and angles.

But we know since Newton that planets do not strictly speaking orbit
the sun. They orbit the 
center of mass of the solar system or as Guass shows for simple cases
the center of mass of the matter inside the distance
the object has currently from the C-of-M.

But even that is not used to caculate eclipses or anything elsee. :)

I have an old ephemeris calculator that I inherited from
a group of amateur astronomers
back in the 1960s.
It is a hod-epodge of heliocentric
and geocentric measurements
plus quite a few more of its own.
It assumes each planet orbits at constant speed
and constant distance from
a central point.
Then it uses hand-build functions
that MODIFY those values to the correct values
you might see by looking at the given
object at a given time.

So it doesnt matter what the laws are. :)

I also use JPL`s Horizons systems a bit.
They are good enough for NASA`s mission
planning purposes.
They calculate an ephemeris containing all
known objcets in the solar system at
any time. Supposedly the ephemeris
when updated periopdically conatins all the objects at some point
and positions them within a few meters of
their expected positions over
a timespan of (I think it is) 30,000 years.

And how do they do it? What kind
of mathematical model do they use?

They take all the known observations
of each object and generate a high-precision
compression of the data -- essentially
a complex polynomial over time.

Again, not really necessary to know how
gravity works. Just that it works. :)
