I don`t sort by `threaded` references; I prefer to sort by date
unthreaded; that way I see the msg/s ordered chronologically. If for
some reason I need to `re-thread` I sort by subject chronologically. It
is rare that I actually need to sort threaded in the case of changing
subjects of a `references` thread.
