Over the summer we`ve introduced a range of new mini PCs to our RISCube 
range.  To be clear, RISCubes run Windows and RISC OS - they aren`t native 
ARM machines.  However, for many people, they`re the perfect blend of 
practicality and familiarity.

These new RISCube Minis are a cut above anything that`s gone before.  The 
big revolution in the size format is the use of m.2 nvme SSDs, allowing 
for small form-factor computers to pack multiple high performance drives.

This is important because we`ve always championed dual-drive approaches in 
our computers - it allows for automated backup and recovery in case of 
problems.  This ensures performance and reliability in a tiny package.

The RISCube Minis are about the size of a large hand - an example might be 
about 5" by 5" by 2" thick.  You can even mount them on the back of your 
monitor.


You might think that such a small box would be weedy or underpowered, but 
they cram the very latest tech into tiny packages.  Take my new work 
machine - for a cost of around 750ukp it has an 8 core, 4.75Ghz CPU, 32GB 
DDR5 RAM, 500 GB main SSD, and a 1TB backup SSD  (can easily be larger).  
Not to mention USB 4 (yes, that`s right USB *4*), Wifi 6 and 2.5 Gb LAN to 
my NAS.

And yes, RISC OS can make use of most of that tech (except the extra CPU 
cores).  My RISC OS desktop flies - up to 4K resolution - and runs both 
32bit and 26bit applications.   It can utilise the wifi, or benefit from 
the next gen performance of 2.5 Gb ethernet.


Other models include nifty features like a knob to control 
power/performance/noice - enjoy quiet mode most of the time, but twist the 
knob for a real-time performance boost (ie. increase maximum power 
profile) for heavy duty workloads.

Cheaper models retain many features, but might feature less RAM or fewer 
CPU cores.

Prices start at under 499ukp.

For those with deeper pockets, we have in stock 2TB and 4TB SSDs, meaning 
you could do a 6TB SSD monster machine for a bit above a grand...  When 
you think of what RiscPCs and Iyonixes cost back in the day, the value is 
amazing.  You can even go up to 10 or 12 core systems!


Of course, there are minor downsides - computers this small don`t have 
CD/DVD drives, but for most people, a USB unit (if they ever need it) is 
hardly an inconvenience.

You don`t tend to get quite as many USB ports as larger machines, but 
that`s easily solved with a conveniently-placed USB hub or monitor with 
built-in USB ports (assuming you need a plethora of USB devices).  My work 
machine has several empty ports, despite having a card reader and phone 
charging cable attached, and separate keyboard/mouse.


So, all in all, these computers offer amazing bang for buck, and have 
finally weened me off my trusty RISCube that you`ve all seen at the 
various exhibitions for the last 15 or so years...  hey - I like my 
computers to last :)
