It`s not that you can`t build models like you did `back in the day` but 
if you`re going to the internet to look for advice of how to do things 
it can be very problematic if not depressing. I have a copy of the book 
The Encyclopedia of Military Modelling published in 1981. Even in my 
teenage years the models in there were something I could certainly aim 
towards. With most of the professional modellers now, no hope of that.

The good thing is if you join a group of other `regular` modellers then 
you`re all in it together and you`re much more grounded in what you`re 
happy with.
