I could manage the dual sticks one-handed. But my timing had to be spot-
on. Later they came out with a single stick air-shift 4 X 4 transmission
that was much easier on the nerves. My favourite box in a semi was the
thirteen speed.
My grandmother and stick shifts were never good friends. Granddad always
bought standard transmission V8 Ford sedans. She would rev the motor and
side-step the clutch, chirping the tires or throwing gravel until the
car was going about 15 MPH. Then straight into high gear - never to come
out of that gear until she came to a complete stop. Riding with her was
very grating on my sensibilities. Best thing ever happened to her driving
was getting a car with an automatic shift after Granddad had passed.
