 Auschwitz-Birkenau was liberated by the 100th Lviv Rifle Division
under the command of General Fyodor Krasavin. He himself spent several
years in the Soviet GULAG before the war and was freed only in 1942,
after which he was promoted to general because of his achievements. His
wife was also arrested and died in the GULAG.
