Hello, Michiel!
Monday October 07 2024 17:32, you wrote to me:

Everything for the glory of our beloved Fidonet! )

MV> Eh.. ?? You were talking about modem over Voip. That should work in

1 line in Moscow is still connected to a proper phone network
which is working perfectly. This is not possible in the UK.
And for VoIP it`s actually easier to connect UK phone number to
existing modem pool in Moscow. Makes no sense to have 2 modem pools ;)
DP>> and CSD has been disabled on UK GSM networks.
MV> CSD??
Yeah, old GSM way to transfer Data. It`s actually a Data call (in
ISDN terms), with 9600 available maximum speed. So you can call any
modem number from GSM modem (or back).
DP>> It`s like HAM radio. Makes little sense if you have mobile phonem

Nah, satellite phone is more convenient ;)

Getting local HAM license is on my todo list ;)
MV>>> Inconvenient for who? In the POTS age there never was a need.

We are very open! My uplink is actually sending modems for free to
anyone interested in establishing a modem link :)
DP>> What if I want connections to different phone companies?
MV> At the time of the founding fathers that was not an option. So of

I think it was possible to get 1 number from Bell and another
from an independent phone company even in the 70s..
DP>> It`s "good enough" emulation :) You won`t notice much difference

MV> If you say so... ;-)
Here in the UK they even still have a working Pager network. And
people pay for it :)
Best regards,
dp.
