I don`t think these people are only influenced by "media reports," at least not
in the traditional sense.  For example, one of them could read your message,
see something in it they are feeling, and find it believable.  

Most people are not going to find evidence of a 9/11 hoax in a valid media
article, but they might find plenty in a social media post or from some
internet talking head... or a post from someone who believes as they do.

Your belief sounds similar to the belief of Brent in the article.  He found it
impossible to believe that US intelligence could have missed the warning signs
and much easier to believe it was some sort of inside job.
