Thank you, that`s an interesting link. I`ve added an empty file named
UART to the microSD card`s msdos partition to see if behavior changes.
As it happens, the problem clears up if I power down the Pi, remove and
replace the microSD card and re-apply power. That makes me wonder if the
microSD socket is somehow faulty. It`s the early style of push-to-latch,
push-to-eject socket. Power cycling alone doesn`t clear the fault, moving
the microSD seems also to be necessary. Does this ring a bell with anyone?
