Yes.  As someone else said, we didn`t call it `muckite` for nothing.
It is a very cheap way to do reasonably high finish castings. Was used a 
lot for e.g. `Dinky/corgi Toys`

Also a lot for low grade industrial casting as you have noted. Now 
rather more likely to have been replaced by plastic in e.g. car 
thermostat housings
