He is, I suppose, making the claim that the question "does life require
genes" is a factual question, not a definitional question.

What, then, is life? I would think that the  appropriate  definition to use
to address this as a factual question would be something like this: life
is something that would be recognized as biological, and comparable to
the existing examples of what we acknowledge to be living. That`s a
pretty vague definition, of course.

But starting from that, asking if things that fit this definition must have a
mechanism resembling genes becomes a factual question.

And I`ve noted what I think the answer is: tentatively, many scientists
suspect the answer is yes, because two factors make it difficult to imagine
that the long-term existence of living things is possible without something
like genes.

- Something like genes was key to avoiding von Neumann machines being
impossible due to infinite regress, and

- Something like genes is required for evolution by natural selection.

However, the phrase "long term existence" indicates how the real answer
could be "no" after all. While all living things we are ever likely to encounter
via space exploration would have genes... a gene-like mechanism would
not develop immediately during *abiogenesis*. First, one would have metabolizing
 entities that didn`t have genes - eventually, one would have a
gene-like mechanism,
and then explode in numbers.

So living things without genes would exist, but to encounter them, one has to
run a Miller-Urey experiment longer, not go exploring in a space ship.
