 Reading the subject line gave me the idea it was a thought
experiment: what if Stanley Schmidt had also taken over editorship of Unknown?
For `80s theme anthologies, it`s not too far out there. I`m not
well-versed to play that game (although typing this, the name Thomas Easton as
a contributor jumps up).

 Okay, a more prosaic anthology from the old magazine. Still under
the purview of the editor of Analog? How inappropriate would it feel to
have one edited by The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction`s Ed
Ferman, or OMNI`s Ben Bova?

Wait, there are Unknown anthologies by other editors?  Six total known so far?
 What are the odds that none of their contents overlap? With 39
issues of the magazine itself, I`m guessing we`re halfway to the ragged
edge of the possible. My bet would be two or three stories shared in
three or two books, but I don`t want to steal thunder from your future
columns.

 So, back to editorship. What permissions are required for a
magazine-specific anthology? I would guess just the right to copy the stories, which
can be gotten from the authors. Reference to the magazine`s title might
cause problems if they feel you are unfairly trying to trade on their
mark; I don`t know an example of an especially litigious editor or
publisher to use as an example. I`m wondering about my daydream book series,
"Be It Ever So Humble, There`s No Press Like Gnome."

 New question: have there been such stealth, or even inadvertent
magazine-centric anthologies? A few of these six titles you mention seem to avoid
mentioning their connection, it remains to be seen how coy they are in their
trade dress or editorial matter. A collection of an author`s series
stories, or a fixup novel made from them are among what I would call
inadvertent.
