I wonder when the tradition of paired magazines merging in the least
viable started.

I`m aware of "Amazing" incorporating "Fantastic" when that folded, and
I think "Galaxy" incorporated "Worlds Of If" when the same thing
happened there.  Would Campbell have had the option to go on publishing
"Astounding Stories Incorporating Unknown" if he had wanted to?
