Partly, and perhaps mostly, because of the decline of individualism in
societal structures.  When a person is dependant on other people to
survive, they generally have to pay them for their services, whereas
doing it yourself is cheaper, but uses up your time to watch TV, text
your BFFs and surf the internet.
