 I`ll give slrn a try; doesn`t seem to be in epel so may have to
download it from github or elsewhere.

Thanks for the suggestion. 

Wonder if having BBS and Usenet servers listed in config; confuses PAN.

 May try removing usenet servers; and only have bbs and see if it
makes a difference.
