I`m not using mint or currently using xfce, but do have it installed.
I think "xfconf-query -c xfce4-desktop -p /backdrop/screen0/monitor0/last-image"
will show the current background image and that the xfconf-query command can
be used to change it. See "xfconf-query --help".
