I`m not sure how you come to that conclusion.  The Burroughs medium
systems had a very successful 40+ year run (1965-2010)[*], with fixed point
decimal.   When the last of the machines was retired in 2010 (built
in the middle 80s), it took 27 windows boxes to replace it.  By the
end, it couldn`t compete with the more widespread binary processors
on a cost basis.

[*] Not counting the Electrodata and Burroughs decimal predecessors
such as the E220 and B300 family dating back to the middle 1950s.
