I should add that the quotes from the Malzberg account that I
posted here included the following statements by Campbell:

> I`m interested in heroes

> science fiction is a problem-solving medium

This leaves room for quite a bit of variety, e.g. Heinlein`s "The
Long Watch" (1948), whose protagonist prevails, but at a great
personal cost. Curiously, it was rejected by the "slicks" [1] and
was eventually published by  American Legion Magazine .

[1] Heinlein wasn`t submitting to  Astounding  in the late 1940s
due, in part, to a disagreement with the publisher`s policy on rights.
Eventually Campbell, who was still friends with Heinlein at the time,
managed to convince Street & Smith to change the policy -- see
Chapter 1, Volume 2 of Bill Patterson`s biography.
