Something called mutations. Every living organism including the DNA`s 
proofreading
and repair machines is subject to mutations. Unfortunately, detrimental 
mutations
outnumber beneficial mutations. There is no reason to suspect that this 
DNA machines
were not affected by a bad mutation; which permitted a few mutations to 
get past the
DNA repair mechanism. Who knows as time passes even more bad mutations, 
which
eventually will wreck havoc of this system. We can only hope not!
